Description:
A liberal professor at a research university, a registered Democrat, has an interesting blog with many data visualizations at http://engram-backtalk.blogspot.com/2007/08/confused-about-casualties-and.html
This visualization shows the positive effects of the recent troop surge (which finally began in June 2007) and change in tactics, which has resulted in the Sunni tribes of the Anbar Province turning against the al Qaeda terrorists in Iraq. The professor says "Al Qaeda's goal is provoke the Shiites "...so that they revolt against the Sunnis." Creating -- not winning -- a civil war is their goal. Why? Look inside yourself and consider how depressed you are about Iraq. There's your answer. You are depressed, you want to pull our troops from Iraq, and al Qaeda knew that you would react that way. All they have to do is to send their suicide bombers against civilians to get you to react that way. When they evict Americans from Iraq using that method, they'll use the same method in Afghanistan (where the utterly incompetent Taliban are currently getting themselves killed in large numbers every week). When al Qaeda comes to town, however, you'll get depressed about that conflict, too (because that's the way you are, and al Qaeda knows it)."
